in Paris. On 26th, he is appointed Head of the Army
in Italy. |

returns to his demotivated troops in Nice, boosts their

and 50,000 men disembark in Alexandria (Egypt). He conquers
the Mamelouks at the Pyramids, but his fleet is destroyed
at Aboukir. He sets off for Syria to repel the Turks,
but fails in front of Saint Jean d'Acre. |

returns to Egypt and repells the Turks who have disembarked
at Aboukir. However he has to leave the army in the
hands of Kléber. |

reaches Fréjus. Nothing is going well in France: the
Directoire is at its last gasp, Italy has been lost
and the economic situation is disastrous. The country
needs a strong man at its head. |

organises the 18 Brumaire a coup d'état, which succeeds
thanks to his brother's support at Cinq-Cents. |
