ST VALLIER DE THIEY : Children's Paradise

A little history
St. Vallier was the bishop of Antibes, and was martyred in the VIth century by the Visigoths when they invaded Provence. Le Thiey is the mountain that overshadows the village, at 1,452 metres.

La Chapelle Sainte Luce , It was built in 1562, and has a well which is reputed to have miraculous properties against eye diseases.

La Chapelle Saint Esprit, (Chapel of the Holy Spirit). It was built in 1635 by the Pénitents Blancs (White Penitents) and is dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Rouguière.

La Pierre Druidique (Druid's Stone) is a slab with contorted shapes, set somewhat precariously on top of another slab.

Le Domaine des Grottes des Audides, (the Grottoes of Les Audides): for 40 minutes, at 60 metres below ground, there are some marvellous natural concretions to be seen that are still active, as well as the birth of a crystal-clear stream. The grotto is open in July-August, daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (guided visits at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.), and in September and June, it is closed on Tuesdays. For the rest of the year, it is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (telephone before travelling to it).
The estate also has a prehistoric Park with an exhibition, with commentary, of sharpened flints followed by a 40-minute guided tour. This is a 800-metre trail through the estate's prehistoric sites, with a real-life reconstruction of various scenes. Geological curiosities: sections of landscape in the shape of ruins, faults and lapiaz (narrow fluting cut into the limestone by superficial karstic erosion). Most of the six grottoes in the park were inhabited in prehistoric times. The park is open daily in July-August from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (guided visits from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and from 12.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.), and in September and June, it is closed on Tuesdays. The rest of the year, it is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (telephone before travelling over).

La Grotte de Baume Obscure, over a distance of 700 metres, 70 metres underground, there is a proliferation of concretions of rare beauty, with lakes and crystal-clear waterfalls. Open throughout the year. April to September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at weekends. July and August: open all week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Guided visits every 6 minutes
