SISTERON
: The Pearl of Haute-Provence
|
|
Sisteron is a city
with a rich medieval heritage, the showpiece of
which is the Citadelle, and there is also the Cathedral
of Notre-Dame des Pommiers, a jewel of Roman art,
the Convents, the Towers of the ramparts, the "andrones
and the couverts." A little history: After experiencing
invasions by the Romans, Lombards, Saxons and other
peoplesŠSisteron became a Provençal city from 1200
onwards. Like its sister towns in the region, it
went through epidemics and incursions by armed hordes:
the citadelle was built to strengthen its defences,
and it was consolidated under Henry IV and "reviewed"
by Vauban

| THE
CITADELLE |
|
The Citadelle, XIIIth,
XVIth and XIXth centuries, is in itself an architectural
treasure. Throughout the visit, there are figurines
and Epinal style pictures along the way, representing
historic personalities who came to Sisteron, such
as the Counts of Provence and Forcalquier, King
René, François I, Vauban and of course Napoleon,
accompanied by his faithful generals. Horse-drawn
vehicles of the period are also exhibited, much
to the joy of both young and not-so-young visitors.
Visit with commentary, open from March to mid-November,
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. without interruption.
