Senez, Treasure of the Alps of Haute Provence

THE ROMAN CATHEDRAL (XIIth and XIIIth centuries)
Both its imposing size and the simplicity of its lines make this one of the loveliest ancient monuments of Haute-Provence. It was classed a Historical Monument in 1840, and again in 1910, and it is the only remnant of the grandeur of the ancient town.

1) Inside one can see

- A High Altar in gilded wood, its stone table consecrated by Monseigneur Soanen on 14 April 1706

- On the right of the High altar, in the wall, a Eucharistic cupboard, which is unique in Provence

- Stalls in solid walnut, decorated with sculptured misericords - A lectern - Two altarpieces in gilded wood, also of the XVIIth century, facing each other

- Tapestries representing Biblical figures or scenes. These were given to the Cathedral by Monseigneur de Ruffo Bonneval after the restoration of the service, at the Restoration.

Of which :

* A Flanders tapestry of Audemar d'Enghien, end of the XVIth century

* 7 d'Aubusson tapestries, end of the XVIIth century

2) The Bell-Tower

demolished by the Protestants at the time of the wars of religion and rebuilt at the beginning of the XVIIIth century, it has two bells from the end of the XIXth century

3) A Sundial

on the west face of the Cathedral, you can see the remains of a sundial made in 1673, and repainted in 1784.

AS YOU GO THROUGH THE VILLAGE....

An ancient fountain of the XVIIth century which has been classed as a historical monument, with its central pillar decorated with very early human masks in the Roman tradition.
