Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban
Crossroads of the Durance
|
|
Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban
is on the right bank of the Durance, upstream
from its confluence with the Bléone. The story
of Château-Arnoux in the XXth century appears
to be wholly marked by the development of
the industrial complex of Saint-Auban (Elf-Atochem).

Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban
then became the fourth town in the department
of Alpes de Haute Provence. In the First World
War, the Middle Durance experienced an unexpected
upheaval: in 1915, a chemical products factory
was set up on the Château-Arnoux territory,
at the foot of the Saint-Auban plateau. The
town of Saint-Auban now spreads out on that
plateau; almost all the avenues and straight
roads bear the names of well-known people from
the chemical field.

On
Sunday morning the traditional Provençal market
is held. At Saint-Auban there is also a meteorological
centre, an aerodrome and a high level centre
for gliding. At Château-Arnoux there is a lake
which is a pleasant place for an outing.
