AIGLUN

The
country appears to have been lived in from very
early times. A large number of tombs marked out
with tumulus bricks has been found, pointing to
Bledonticians having lived here &endash; but
equally there have been discoveries of flint axes
proving that there was an even earlier occupation.
The oldest remnants are those of the
ruins of the chapelle Saint-Jean (1)
, standing above Thoron. This Roman Chapel of
the XIIth century. is in Lombardy style.
The position of the village on a height made it
suitable for the building of fortifications, and
the remains of towers and ramparts demonstrate this.
Aiglun, overlooked by the
Church Sainte Marie-Madeleine (2)
, has a second château in the plain, called
the "château de Villeneuve". It was built in the
XVIIth century, and was the mansion of the bishops
of Digne before being purchased in 1820 by Mathieu
Autric, former aide de camp of Napoleon I, who died
at Aiglun and was buried in the cemetery of the
old village.
In
the commune there is a real trace of the "Route
Napoléon" with, in particular, a
splendid stone bridge (3)
. Today this route is called "Voie Impériale"
(Empire Way).
